A Model of Village Festivals Revitalizing Tradition, Modernity, and Rural Community

The 'Chuyang-ri Gochugol Solbaram Festival' held in Chuyang-ri, Chochon-myeon, Buyeo-gun, was conducted on December 7, 2024, led by local residents. This festival is a community-driven event based on the village's cultural traditions, focusing on the inheritance of traditions and the specialization of local resources.

Chuyang-ri was selected for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' contest project in 2021 and is also participating in the 2024 Buyeo Rural Creative project. The village's traditional "Durepungjang" has been recognized as a future heritage project.

The festival began with the village's traditional "Durepungjang Gilnori" and continued with residents dancing together to the tune of Jindo Arirang. Various programs were held during the festival, including health exercises, sports dance, a local song contest, performances on the daegeum and saxophone, and dances by the Solbaram Dance Troupe, providing joy and happiness to the residents.

Chairman Lee Bo-an of the organizing committee stated, "Despite the decrease in the rural population and challenging economic conditions, this festival allowed all residents to relieve their fatigue." He added, "It was wonderful to invite neighboring villages such as Chopyeong-ri, Eunpyeong-ri, and Munhwa Village to enjoy together." Village heads Kang Gun-sik and Lee Eon-yeol remarked, "The Chuyang-ri Festival is significant as it is created and enjoyed by the village residents themselves, rather than external tourists." The event planner, Lee Bo-deung, expressed pride, saying, "Although we hear that rural areas are disappearing, it is gratifying that the village's Durepungjang, grandmother dance troupe, woodblock printing, and quilting groups collaborate and support each other to continue the festival."
