The 15th Daejeon Hyo Festival, hosted by the Jung-gu District Office (Mayor Kim Je-seon), took place from October 11 to 13 in the vicinity of Ppu-ri Park, Sanseong-dong, Daejeon.

This festival celebrates the essence of traditional culture and has been recognized as a 'Preliminary Festival of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for 2024.'

Since its inception in 2008, it is unique in the nation for focusing on the themes of "효" and "뿌리". The festival aims to honor and preserve Korean spiritual culture while emphasizing the importance of family and fostering respect and harmony among generations. This year, it was proudly designated as one of only 20 preliminary festivals among hundreds held nationwide.

The festival serves as a cultural gathering of identity, featuring participation from 244 clans across South Korea. The "Clan Entry Parade" showcased participation from 105 of these clans, underscoring the festival's cultural significance. The Daejeon Jung-gu District is well-equipped with notable infrastructures for Hyo culture, including the Ppuri-Park, the Korean Family Registry Museum, Hyo Culture Village, and the Hyo Culture Promotion Center.

Potential to Elevate Korean Spiritual Values Globally

This year’s festival saw participation from Koreans abroad, North Korean defectors, and foreigners from Kazakhstan, enhancing its global dimension. Efforts to promote the festival internationally helped open avenues for its recognition as a global event. The "Hyo Excellence Contest" also featured entries from international participants, representing countries including Germany, Belgium, the UK, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Mayor Kim Je-seon stated that the Daejeon Hyo Festival is the only festival in the nation that consistently focuses on "효" and "뿌리". He emphasized that filial piety should be cherished and promoted worldwide as a value that fosters respect and love across generations.
