Buyeo County (Mayor Park Jung-hyun 박정현) has officially signed a sister city agreement with Gwangju City (Mayor Bang Se-hwan) on the 22nd at Gwangju City Hall, aimed at fostering mutual development.
The signing ceremony was attended by over 30 officials, including Mayor Park and Mayor Bang. Notably, Kim Young-chun, Chair of the Buyeo County Council, and Heo Kyung-haeng, Chair of the Gwangju City Council, also participated, expressing their commitment to actively support the development of both cities through their respective councils.
Moving forward, the two cities will establish a cooperative framework to address shared interests across various sectors, including administration, economy, culture, and education. They have agreed to actively promote understanding, harmony, and welfare among residents through diverse exchanges and collaborations that leverage the unique characteristics of their regions.
Mayor Park Jung-hyun stated, “This sister city agreement lays the groundwork for mutual cooperation and development between our two cities. I hope that active exchanges between urban and rural areas will help address issues such as population decline and the potential for regional extinction.”
Mayor Bang Se-hwan added, “I welcome Buyeo’s visit and will work to ensure that our cities, united by our shared heritage of Baekje history, can thrive together. We will collaborate for the benefit of both communities starting from today’s exchanges.”
Gwangju City, historically the capital during the reign of King Onjo of Baekje, shares a rich cultural legacy with Buyeo County as an ancient capital of the Baekje Kingdom. Additionally, Gwangju serves as a center for eco-friendly agricultural production, utilizing its status as a complex urban-rural city to promote direct sales markets for agricultural products
Given these similarities, the sister city agreement between Buyeo County and Gwangju City is expected to yield significant synergy in various areas in the future.
