Buyeo-gun’s (부여군) Agricultural Initiative in Uzbekistan Paves the Way for Enhanced Food Sovereignty

Namang Province, Uzbekistan – Buyeo-gun’s foray into Uzbekistan’s agricultural sector is gaining attention as a groundbreaking model for bilateral development and food sovereignty. The ongoing rice cultivation complex in Namang Province is poised to become a significant example of how international cooperation can enhance food security and agricultural innovation.

Successful Launch of K-Buju Guttrae Rice Cultivation

Buyeo-gun, led by Governor Park Jung-hyun, has reported promising results from its pilot project in Uzbekistan. The initiative, which involves cultivating K-Buju Guttrae rice, marks a significant step in advancing cooperative agricultural practices. The project, which began with mechanical transplantation on a 10-hectare site from June 27 to July 2, employed advanced Korean agricultural techniques including water management, weed control, and fertilization.

Initial observations during a local visit on August 1 indicated a marked reduction in weed growth compared to traditional local methods. The project is anticipated to yield approximately 7 tons of rice per hectare. Despite a slight delay in the project’s timeline compared to local practices, Buyeo-gun’s Agricultural Technology Center, under the guidance of Park Gap-soon, remains optimistic about a successful harvest between October 20 and 25.

Plans for Expansion and Diversification

Looking ahead, Buyeo-gun and Uzbekistan have ambitious plans to expand the rice cultivation complex to 200 hectares by 2025. This expansion aims to establish a high-quality, high-yield farming operation through large-scale compartmentalization. Additionally, a new 10-hectare early watermelon complex is set to be developed, enabling shipments in May when watermelon prices are favorable. This initiative will incorporate advanced watermelon and rice cultivation techniques, aiming to enhance the economic viability of agricultural ventures in Uzbekistan.

Positive Feedback and Future Prospects

Vice President Begjod of MOGD Farm, a partner in the project, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “We are hopeful that Buyeo-gun’s dedication and efforts will lead to significant achievements, and we look forward to continued strong cooperation.”

Governor Park Jung-hyun underscored Buyeo-gun’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development and food security. “Our goal extends beyond technology transfer; we are dedicated to contributing to the enduring agricultural advancement and food security of both nations,” said Governor Park.
