Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, on the first day of the 2022 Daejeon UCLG World Congress, attended the UCLG ASPAC (Asia Pacific Branch) Executive Branch meeting.
The meeting was held jointly with Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo and ASPA President Ashok Kumar.
The meeting includes 2022 activity report, executive committee members, etc., 2023 work plan. It was conducted with programs, projects, and budget approval.
In his welcoming speech, Mayor Lee said, "Daejeon is a science city where the 4th industrial revolution technology and the best natural environment are harmonized, and it is the best place to discuss the future and the challenges at hand" he introduced Daejeon.
In addition, "Local governments of each country should jointly respond to the problems facing the world, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, and work together for sustainable urban development. We should work together," he stressed.
Furthermore, Mayor Lee said, "The Asia-Pacific region is an industrial culture. Joint development as one will provide unlimited potential for development in various fields such as tourism. For growth and prosperity, UCLG ASPAC member cities gather here for wisdom. Let's work together." he suggested.
In particular, Mayor Lee said, "The Daejeon Track, as a city of science and technology, prepared several sessions based on the basic purpose of Daejeon to find solutions through scientific and technological approaches to various problems faced by local governments around the world." He said that not only Daejeon but also various government agencies and research institutes in Korea are working together. We asked for the interest and participation of the ASPAC executive branch."
Mayor Lee then said, “There has never been a case in which a UCLG planner has been elected from a country in the Asia-Pacific region. He explained the background of his candidacy for world president, “to expand the role of local governments in the international arena to make their voices louder and to promote a sustainable economy, innovative industries, and decent jobs through policy sharing and communication between local governments. We promise that we will do our best to solve common global problems such as creation, inequality alleviation, and climate change response,” and asked for a lot of interest and support from ASPAC members. It consists of representatives of 20 selected from 46 local governments, and the representation of the Republic of Korea - Provincial Governors' Council of Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan are participating.
